    Non-assimilated tidal modeling of the South China Sea

    AbstractThe tides in the South China Sea were simulated using an established tidal model, with the purpose to evaluate if non-assimilated modeling of the area is feasible. Simulations were done for the locally dominating diurnal (K1) and semi-diurnal (M2) tidal constituents, and the model was shown to provide reasonably accurate results in terms of both elevations and levels of dissipation. However, this was only the case when a realistic tidal conversion parameterization was included in the model, and it is suggested that tidal conversion is a missing process in other model efforts of the area. Compared to observations, the modeled dissipation levels were slightly overestimated when integrated over the entire domain, and far larger in the model at topography with a slope which is supercritical for the baroclinic tidal waves. A crude, empirical correction of the tidal conversion rates at supercritical topography is suggested and implemented in the model and shown to improve the model results in terms of both elevations and dissipation rates. It is concluded that the presented model set up is suitable for investigations of how perturbations, e.g., future sea-level rise, will affect the tidal dynamics in the South China Sea

    Sea level rise and tidal power plants in the Gulf of Maine

    The response of the Bay of Fundy and Gulf of Maine to large-scale tidal power plants and future sea-level rise is investigated using an established numerical tidal model. Free stream tidal turbines were simulated within the Bay of Fundy by implementing an additional bed friction term, Kt. The present-day maximum tidal power output was determined to be 7.1 GW, and required Kt�=�0.03. Extraction at this level would lead to large changes in the tidal amplitudes across the Gulf of Maine. With future SLR implemented, the energy available for extraction increases with 0.5�1 GW per m SLR. SLR simulations without tidal power extraction revealed that the response of the semidiurnal tides to SLR is highly dependent on how changes in sea level are implemented in the model. When extensive flood defenses are assumed at the present-day coast line, the response to SLR is far larger than when land is allowed to (permanently) flood. For example, within the Bay of Fundy itself, the M2 amplitude increases with nearly 0.12 m per m SLR without flooding, but it changes with only 0.03 m per m SLR with flooding. We suggest that this is due to the flooding of land cells changing the resonant properties of the basin

    We study pion absorption on 3He employing trinucleon wave functions calculated from modern realistic NN interactions (Paris, CD Bonn). Even though the use of the new wave functions leads to a significant improvement over older calculations with regard to both cross section and polarization data, there are hints that polarization data with quasifree kinematics cannot be described by just two-nucleon absorption mechanisms.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

    Electroproduction of the d* dibaryon

    The unpolarized cross section for the electroproduction of the isoscalar Jπ=3+J^\pi = 3^+ di-delta dibaryon d∗d^* is calculated for deuteron target using a simple picture of elastic electron-baryon scattering from the ΔΔ(7D1)\Delta \Delta (^7D_1) and the NN(3S1)NN (^3S_1) components of the deuteron. The calculated differential cross section at the electron lab energy of 1 GeV has the value of about 0.24 (0.05) nb/sr at the lab angle of 10∘^\circ (30∘^\circ) for the Bonn B potential when the dibaryon mass is taken to be 2.1 GeV. The cross section decreases rapidly with increasing dibaryon mass. A large calculated width of 40 MeV for d∗(ΔΔ7S3)d^*(\Delta\Delta ^7S_3) combined with a small experimental upper bound of 0.08 MeV for the d∗d^* decay width appears to have excluded any low-mass d∗d^* model containing a significant admixture of the ΔΔ(7S3)\Delta\Delta (^7S_3) configuration.Comment: 11 journal-style pages, 8 figure

    ‘An altered view regarding the relationship between dreams and reality’: magic, politics and the comics medium in Alan Moore and Jacen Burrow’s Providence

    Alan Moore reports that, through researching Providence, he ‘became more fully acquainted with academic literary criticism’ (Moore and Green 2016) and the extensive evidence of research throughout the series supports this claim. In this article, I argue that Providence uses the comics form to assert the value of humanities research and of the arts more broadly, and to educate its audience in reading and research practices (some of which are more providential than others). My focus is on the relationships between imagination and the historical realities of readers; while the latter are not detailed at length, the discussion does map onto the real world of Brexit, the aftermath of the 2016 US Presidential election and austerity politics because Moore’s underlying premise is that it is possible to trace the origins of our contemporary moment through the societal anxieties encoded in Lovecraft’s fiction. The analysis combines key concepts from adaptation studies with the theoretical model of the comics system proposed by Thierry Groensteen; moreover, it both draws upon and extends Brian McHale’s work on metafiction to suggest ways of extending Groensteen’s model in order to better understand the way in which Providence uses the comics medium to put into practice his hopes concerning the world-altering potential of art and scholarship

    Baroclinic energy flux at the continental shelf edgemodified by wind-mixing

    Temperature and current measurements from two moorings onshore of the Celtic Sea shelf break, a well-known hot spot for tidal energy conversion, show the impact of passing summer storms on the baroclinic wavefield. Wind-driven vertical mixing changed stratification to permit an increased on-shelf energy transport, and baroclinic energy in the semidiurnal band appeared at the moorings 1�4 days after the storm mixed the upper 50 m of the water column. The timing of the maximum in the baroclinic energy flux is consistent with the propagation of the semidiurnal internal tide from generation sites at the shelf break to the moorings 40 km away. Also, the �3 day duration of the peak in M2 baroclinic energy flux at the moorings corresponds to the restratification time scale following the first storm

    A bound on 6D N=1 supergravities

    We prove that there are only finitely many distinct semi-simple gauge groups and matter representations possible in consistent 6D chiral (1,0) supergravity theories with one tensor multiplet. The proof relies only on features of the low-energy theory; the consistency conditions we impose are that anomalies should be cancelled by the Green-Schwarz mechanism, and that the kinetic terms for all fields should be positive in some region of moduli space.
